Being one of the oldest government-protected forest lands in the U.S., the Bighorn National Forest became a US Forest Reserve in 1887. The Bighorn Mountains are a sister range of the Rocky Mountains.
In 1984, Congress passed the Wilderness Act, which designated the Cloud Peak Wilderness in the Bighorn National Forest. The Cloud Peak Wilderness and its majestic alpine scenery were managed as the Cloud Peak Primitive Area as far back as 1832. Cloud Peak, being 13,171 feet is the highest peak within this beautiful National Forest and Cloud Peak Wilderness area and a very sought-after hiking challenge.
The famous Bomber Mountain was named by the National Forest Service in remembrance of the crash of a B-17 Flying Fortress on June 28th, 1943 during World War II. Twenty-four-year-old U.S. Army Air Corpsman Billy Ronaghan and his crew of nine were in flight from Oregon with machine guns and ammunition, headed to Nebraska anticipating orders to deploy to Europe. The crash was not located for two years, when a couple of cowboys caught a glimpse of the plane on the ridge. Two days later on August 15th, 1945 (VJ Day to be exact), a recovery crew rode to Misty Moon Lake at the base of the mountain where they scrambled up the boulder fields to the horrific wreckage.
Wapiti Ridge Outfitters offers a horseback pack trip to the base of Cloud Peak and Bomber Mountain to challenge yourself in a climb to be remembered paying tribute to the memorial and the men who were on their way to sacrifice for us.
